When to Replace Siding in Buffalo, MN

Signs Your Siding Needs to Be Replaced

There are several different types of siding. Knowing the signs of aging for each type will help you decide when it’s time to look for a trustworthy siding contractor in your area. Let’s look at the different types of siding and the signs they need to be replaced.

Vinyl Siding

One of the most common and budget-friendly materials is vinyl. Although manufacturers’ warranties vary between brands, most vinyl sidings are expected to last at least 20 years if maintained properly. However, storm damage, fading, or fire damage may affect this lifespan. If your vinyl siding has chips or cracks from storms or other types of damage, it may be time to replace it, or to fix it at the very least. Chips and cracks in your siding can allow moisture into the wood layers of your walls, causing rot or mold to develop. It should be fixed quickly to prevent further damage to your home.  Fading from extensive sunlight or weather may occur to some types of vinyl siding over time as well. The sides of your home that catch more sunlight may fade a bit quicker than those primarily in the shade. Some warranties cover fading for a certain amount of time. If your siding is noticeably faded, it may be time to replace it to restore the curb appeal. Vinyl siding may also need to be replaced due to fire damage, as melting occurs at high temperatures. This may include damage from a grill that sits too close to the wall.

Fiber Cement Siding

On the more expensive side, fiber cement siding is a common, low-maintenance siding. The panels are extremely durable and resistant to harsh weather. While warranties may last up to fifty years, some damage may require replacing your siding sooner. Severe storm damage may in some cases crack the siding. If your cement board siding has cracks or noticeable wear, it may need to be replaced. If the siding is not cracked, but simply faded, you may only need to repaint the siding to give a fresh new look. Cement board siding typically needs new paint every 10 to 15 years. Cement board siding is also resistant to rot and fire damage (though it is not totally fireproof), making it an excellent upgrade from vinyl.

Wood or Composite Siding

Wood siding may be more expensive, depending on the brand and styles you have to replace. While beautiful and adding charm to your home’s exterior, wood siding can rot over time. If you see signs of rot, check with your local siding contractor to see if it can be fixed or if it all needs to be replaced. Wood will also need to be repainted every 3 to 7 years, making it more labor intensive than some other types of siding. Wood is also subject to termite damage. If your siding has signs of insect damage, it may need to be replaced before the damage spreads to other areas of your home’s wood structure. On average, wood siding lasts between 15 and 40 years, depending on how well it’s maintained and the type of damage it encounters.
